So recently, I’ve started a new job working for a reasonably big fashion brand. I always struggle to describe my job to people but I basically reach out to influencers and make collaborations happen for the brand.
For someone who spends a lot of time on influencers’ social pages, an observation I made was how influencers niche down their style to a specific aesthetic, then maybe a sub-category of that aesthetic and then put their own spin on it. Some influencers will refuse to work with certain brands if that brand’s style doesn’t fit their aesthetic or their style.
There is something I love about this and there’s something I am not much of a fan of.
I think it’s great that people have narrowed down their personal style to the point that it is theirs and only theirs. They have their own way of expressing themselves and it is clearly working for them.
However, I hate how this means there is also a lack of space to explore. It’s like being stuck only being able to express yourself in one way.
This possibly doesn’t affect most people but recently I’ve been putting a little bit more thought into my personal style. If I had to describe my style it would be classy boujee but I also have elements of street style with a lot of colour coordination and prints infused into this mix.
My style is still a work in progress however I know I love to stand out in an effortless way. On the other hand, style has also helped me fit in. I have moved around a lot in my life and sometimes I use style to ‘fit in’ to the new places and the new people I am around. All my friends are so different. If I am out with my more grungy friends I’ll wear something grungy but make it a little sexy with matching heels. If I am with my friends who love to dress up, I’ll wear something glam that I can stand out in but also make it look effortless.
I’m still trying to figure out my personal style and what I am trying to say through my style. I definitely don’t want to use style to fit in, but I want people to still appreciate my style if that makes sense?
In the next few weeks, I’m going to be updating my wardrobe so there will definitely be more of this type of content on this blog. Make sure to follow if you want to follow my personal style journey or comment below how you would describe your style and if you can relate to my mini identity crisis.
