How To Keep On Top Of The Gym

For years, the gym was a place I was in and out of without really knowing what I was doing, and I was so inconsistent! These past two years, I have finally found a ‘flow’ that works for me when it comes to my fitness. Here are a few tips I frequently share with friends and people I meet who also want to be consistent at the gym and have told me that it helped them stay motivated too!

  1. First Goal Should Always Be, To Be Consistent – Over the years, I’ve learned that when it comes to anything, if you are consistent, you’re already 50% of the way there. You will have days where you go the extra mile and days where you barely feel like you did anything, but the simple fact that you showed up already means you are halfway there. The fact that you keep showing up means you will always be improving in some way, even if it’s just a little each time.
  2. Showing Up Even When You Don’t Feel Like It – This follows perfectly from my first point. Showing up on the days you simply don’t feel like it is more important than the days you were excited about going in the first place. If we only ever did things on the days we felt like it, we wouldn’t get anything done, and we can easily fall out of the habit. Show yourself some grace, of course, but at the same time, don’t let yourself make excuses.
  3. Keeping Track is So Important – It’s important to keep track of your progress because, firstly, you will probably forget how far you’ve come, and secondly, when you keep track, it will automatically keep you motivated. Looking back on how far you’ve come has always pushed me because it reminds me of my progress. I would love to share how I track my progress for everyone to use as it works for me so well! I made my tracking so simple but made sure to cover all the basics too. I will be sharing this on my blog soon, so make sure to sign up to be emailed when it’s up!
  4. Find Your ‘Flow – A lot of my tips are quite general and can help anyone, but we all have our individual ‘flow’ that works for us. For example, I know that if I haven’t done a certain amount of work in a day, there is no point in going to the gym because I will be more behind in other areas of my life, and I am only using the gym as a distraction. Or, if I am not feeling well, even slightly, I won’t push myself or expect any movement until I’ve fully recovered because training when my body doesn’t feel 100% makes me resent working out in the first place. I’m sure everyone has their personal non-negotiables when it comes to going or not going to the gym or even how hard they plan on training that day. Pay close attention to what works for you and remember that what works for someone else might not always work for you.

These are just a few tips that have helped me. Let me know if you have your own ways of staying motivated for the gym. I’d love to hear them below!
