There is a version of ourselves in our heads that we wish we were. From the way we dress to the way we talk, the achievements we acquire to the friends we have. We all have an ‘ideal’ version of ourselves, and sometimes that version of ourselves feels so far away.
Here are a few tips to help you get one step closer to exactly who you want to be—some tips I use to get myself to the dream version of myself.
1. Direction is more important than speed
We think going fast proves we are going somewhere amazing and special, and it looks great from the outside. However, I can tell you for free, a lot of people are going nowhere FAST. Not knowing what you truly want and just rushing to tick some boxes might feel great for a short period of time, but in the long run, it can leave you feeling unfulfilled. The first step is figuring out what is important to you and finding your ‘why’
2. Who is ‘she’?
Something I found in my Goal Book recently was a little task I did while I was at uni where I drew my current self (who I was, as this is now my past self), and on another page, I drew my future self and who I actually want to be. I wrote down exactly who she was—what I imagined my dream version to be like. I would recommend doing this every few years as who you want to be might change, but this is a great task to do. The second step to this is figuring out what needs to change to get from the first version of yourself to the second version of yourself.
3. A little bit of confidence
I think for most people—and I could be wrong—the thing that holds them back from becoming their dream self is a lack of confidence. I have said this before and I will say it again: confidence is a skill and something you have to work on. It is built by doing and is rarely something that magically appears, and if it does, it doesn’t last for long unless you work on it. I have a few posts on this, which I will link here and here for you so I don’t end up repeating myself too much.
4. Commitment to yourself
Step four is easier said than done, but it is important you are disciplined in the pursuit of becoming your dream self. You can’t just do the things you need to do to get where you want to go only on the days you feel like it. It has to be a daily, intentional push to get yourself to the place you see yourself. No one is going to do it for you, so you have to push yourself!
5. Celebrate the small wins too
There is nothing wrong with having big goals and bigger dreams. However, learn to love where you are when you’re there. There are many people whose dream is to come as far as you have already come. Make sure to appreciate where you are now, as it can be easy to get lost in self-improvement and not enjoy the present or celebrate the small wins. One of my favourite quotes recently is, “It’s not about the trophy but what it took to grab it,” and ever since I heard it, I can’t stop thinking about it. It is important to appreciate every stage, as that’s where your dream self is built.
I hope these tips have helped you realise that becoming your dream version of yourself is simple but not easy! I hope this motivates you to keep going too, and I would love to hear about your journey in becoming your dream self.
